MRT is proud to be piloting a theatre arts enrichment series for Serenity High School, which serves students in recovery. Our enrichment series aims to use theatre to cultivate confidence, empathy, and self-expression. Led by DeAnna Stone, a theatre director and educator with over 25 years of experience, this initiative utilizes storytelling, movement, and creative expression to develop communication skills, emotional awareness, and self-confidence — skills that support both personal growth and long-term recovery.
Research consistently shows that theatre education helps young people:
Serenity High is one of America's longest-tenured recovery high schools and is part of the McKinney Independent School District, serving students in other districts across North Texas as well. Serenity High exists for adolescents returning from recognized substance abuse treatment centers who are committed to obtaining a high school diploma in a safe and supportive, chemical-free environment. Serenity High offers students in recovery an opportunity to grow (academically, emotionally, and
socially) by integrating the principles of recovery into their education. Serenity High’s culture and
academics create an environment where students in recovery can truly flourish.
